Change my heart…renew my strength

“But those who entwine their hearts with Yahweh will experience divine strength. They will rise up on soaring wings and fly like eagles, run their races without growing weary, and walk through life without giving up.” This is Isaiah 40:31 from The Passion Translation.

God is the Potter, we are the clay that he molds according to His divine purposes. Clay vessels come in various shapes, styles and textures in accordance with the purposes for which they were molded or created.

God knows the purpose for which He made each human person. Our primary pursuit, our heart’s desire should be to cooperate with the maker to discover  and live that purpose. We should ask and rely on the Potter who alone energizes  and enables us to be willing and to be able to accomplish his purposes.

But it starts in the heart. “Change my heart,  Lord…make it true…”

Isaiah 40: 3-4  NLT says the glory of the Lord will be revealed and all will see it. but first we have a role to play in our hearts. We must vacuum and get rid of the murk, debris and every hindrance:

“Clear the way through the wilderness for the Lord! Make a straight highway through the wasteland for our God! Fill in the valleys, and level the mountains and hills. Straighten the curves, and smooth out the rough places” (Isaiah 40:3-5).

Pleasing God by Living a Life of Faith ( A Call to Live in Faith’s Fullness)

In our social media and AI - dominated world and lives, concepts like 'faith' often sound outdated, unreal and too far removed from our present realities. We have the "all-knowing" Google  that we spontaneously turn to obtain  answers to our every question. Indeed, social media seems to have an answer to every need. Users tend also to put their full trust in the answers they derive from the media.

Inevitably, we experience  formidable mountains in  the form of challenges that Google cannot solve. Oftentimes under such  circumstances, a person may then turn to  God  as  a last resort, when everything else appears to have failed. In actual fact,  God should be our first port of call which is why the Bible advises that we pray without ceasing.

When we turn to Hebrews 11, the foremost chapter of scripture that deals with faith, we come face-to-face with the lives of Biblical heroes that demonstrate to us what it means to live by faith. Interestingly, when we refer to these as heroes, it does not mean they were supernatural and infallible beings. Amongst those that walked this Hall of Faith were Rahab (a prostitute); Gideon, the warrior who at the start  was petrified with fear and hid  from Israel's enemies; Samson who who fell under the spell of a seductress, and Sarah who at the onset laughed in skepticism at the thought of carrying a child in old age. Essentially, what stood the heroes of faith apart was the decision each  made to believe God regardless of  who they were and their life situations.

In defining faith, The Passion Translation says : "Now faith brings our hopes into reality and becomes the foundation needed to acquire the things we long for. It is all the evidence required to prove what is still unseen." (Hebrews 11:1). Verse 2 notes that it is for the reason of their testimonies of faith that these men and women received commendation from God.

But where  and how do we start  to embrace  and to build faith. Is it attainable today in as huge a measure as we found in the men and women of old?  The Bible assures us that "... faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ" (Romans 10:17 NLT). The Living Bible adds: "Yet faith comes from listening to this Good News—the Good News about Christ." So you read, study, listen to hear with your inner ear. The more you hear, the more faith grows.

Why is faith so important? The Bible says "without faith living within us it would be  impossible" for you or I to please God. That seems pretty stiff. Why does God value our faith in Him so highly?  It is a demonstration of our trust and belief in God and His word. Our faith in God is an acknowledgement that we are persuaded that God is real  and alive and he loves us.  He presides over the affairs of this life  (Daniel 4:7).  Thus, he rewards us when we act in faith who believe in him. In fact God values our faith in  him so much that he equates that believing faith with righteousness. "And Abram believed the LORD, and the LORD counted him as righteous because of his faith." (Genesis 15:6 NLT).

Faith opens our heart to receive revelations from God. Noah received the revelation  about the impending flood and  this strengthened him to act even when  his actions appeared foolish - building a boat on dry land. Faith empowered Abraham to obey God's instruction to relocate to a new land he knew nothing about.  However, as he later found out - this was his destiny. As we find later in his life,  he also had to exercise bold faith to enter into his calling as  'father of many nations,'  being already a century old  when the child of promise was born.  Indeed, the revelation  that started with  a relocation continued to  unfold beyond  his death and included his descendants Isaac and Jacob, and indeed all those who believe by faith thereafter. But he had to take the bold  step of faith first.

Faith "inspired" Joseph to peer into the future and to give instructions to his family before his death.  Most interestingly, in  Abraham’s case, backed by his bold faith,  it was logical for him to believe without an iota of doubt that  God would raise Isaac from the dead, if that was the strategy God chose to employ. Indeed through their faith, some of these heroes endured excruciating pain  and atrocities that led to the death of some. Faith does not only enable you to access the sweet things of  life but empowers you to endure tribulation that others cannot even imagine, and still stand having emerged victorious.

According the to the Bible, "their faith fastened onto their promises and pulled them into reality... although weak, their faith imparted power to make them strong!"  (Hebrews 11:33 & 34). Thus faith has the capacity  and the power to pull things out of the invisible realm into our earthly realm. It is no wonder that these heroes, even in death, held onto what they believed by faith.

It goes without a doubt, therefore, that for these heroes the visible world did not hold sway over their lives, in the sense that this was not what they lived for. (“Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own.” - Luke 12;15 NLT). Though they enjoyed the riches that this world could offer because they sought the kingdom of God first and God's righteousness, they habitually  looked  beyond this realm into the spiritual realm. Faith served as a versatile gateway between the earth and the heavenly realm.  This earthly body of flesh could not restrain or impede them. They transcended the earth, seeking earnestly that heavenly  kingdom where God is the builder and architect.

Hebrews 11 concludes on a most optimistic note “But now God has invited us [you and I] to live in something better than what they had—faith’s fullness!  (‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭11‬:‭40‬ ‭TPT‬‬). Hebrews 2:2  neatly concludes the argument: “We look away from the natural realm and we focus our attention and expectation onto Jesus who birthed faith within us and who leads us forward into faith’s perfection." ‭‭(TPT‬‬).

A Dreadful Place

I enter into this dreadful place, all aglow
with the golden orange hue of Your presence

I gasp in awe at the breathtakingly beautiful and  serene reflection of your effervescence
Your awesome wonder, your fiery-ice
The manifoldness of your Godhead... trapped in this one moment in time

I experience the stillness of you
in unison with your unquantifiable power

Entering the calm river of your presence
Sitting mesmerised and enchanted in your still waters
At the juncture when time freezes
...in your liquid fires

I lay me down to sleep in meadows so green
They are three-dimensional
I am totally enmeshed in the warmth and love of you...I find peace
... I see me for the first time

Jacob said it is is a dreadful place where God resides

From the deepest recesses of my being erupts
unbridled bottom-deep laughter that rolls and rolls
like the waves of a gentle sea

Has God said it?
It must surely come to pass

The Guide To Life And Successful Living

The Creator of the universe, Almighty God (The trinity of God the Father, The Son and the Holy Spirit); has provided us with the user manual or Guide to Life and Successful Living - The Bible. Hear this:

And at the harvest, the delicate herbs and spices,
the dill and cumin, are treated delicately. On the other hand, wheat is threshed and milled, but still not endlessly.
The farmer knows how to treat each kind of grain.
He’s learned it all from God-of-the-Angel-Armies,
who knows everything about when and how and where… (Isaiah 28:27-29 The Message)

You need wisdom to solve life’s challenges and problems as they come. You cannot use the same methodology to solve every challenge. You cannot use the methods you used last year or even five years ago to solve today’s challenge.  You need daily nuggets of wisdom from God. Isaiah 28:29 says, “The Lord of Hosts is a wonderful teacher and gives the farmer wisdom”.

The Bible also advises that whatever you do, in love or business or other areas, do not “yoke yourselves with unbelievers, thus piling up your sin" (Isaiah 30:1). If you  trust Pharaoh, you will be disappointed, humiliated and disgraced because “he can’t deliver on his promises to save you” (verse 3).  The relationship might appear to hold great promise at the beginning, “yet it will turn out to your shame – he won’t help one little bit!" (verse 4). You will labour hard "and Egypt will give you nothing in return! For Egypt's promises are worthless!" (Verse 7).

Isaiah is astonishingly rich with wisdom.  The lesson is that you must always touch base with the Creator’s manual to gain the know-how for the different situations that life plays up.

What is the role of the  third person of the Trinity in all of these? In John 16:4, Jesus explains: “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me.”

You must gain courage as a believer because “We are surrounded by the walls of his salvation” (Isaiah 26:1).  Above all, the user manual assures us that  “he will keep in perfect peace  all those who trust in him, whose thoughts turn often to the Lord!” (Isaiah 26:3).

I Am Bold And Strong

The Lord my God is with me wherever I go, therefore,  I am bold and strong and I banish fear and doubt! (Joshua 1:9)

I carry God’s life-giving spirit within me. I am therefore a life-giver myself – light of the world and salt of the earth.  The Lord of Hosts; God of the Angel Armies dwells within me. He is none other than creator of heaven and earth. In me resides the very same power that raised Christ from the dead. But sadly, oftentimes I forget these facts. This is usually to Satan’s advantage because instead of seeing myself as God sees me, I often allow the lethal duo of Fear and Doubt to dominate. These two are debilitating spirits because when they take over a victim, it is lethal. They inject venom into the system of their target akin to how serpents operate.

First of all Fear completely paralyses the victim; the person becomes incapable of taking any good decisions or actions. Doubt ushers in confusion, and immediately, peace takes flight. Thus, together, doubt and fear defeat and vanquish their victim by causing him /her to utter words completely opposed to what God’s word  says about that person. Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks, remember? The victim becomes a paragon of the condition that James describes: “But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways” (James 1:6-8 ESV).

The antidote?  Lets look at Joshua again; chapter one and verse 8 – “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.”

I declare that the Lord  my God is with me wherever I go. Therefore, I am bold and strong and I banish Fear and Doubt from my life, in the name of Jesus. Amen.

This is the Secret

This is the Secret

"AND THIS IS THE SECRET: that Christ in your hearts is your only hope of glory.... That you will have the rich experience of knowing Christ with real certainty and clear understanding. For God's secret plan, now at last made known is Christ himself. In him lie hidden all the mighty, untapped treasures of  wisdom and knowledge. I am saying this because I am afraid that someone may fool you with smooth talk. For though I am far from you, my heart is with you, happy because you are getting along so well, happy because of your strong faith in Christ. And now, just as you trusted Christ to save you, trust him, too, for each day's problems; live in vital union with him. Let your roots grow down into him and draw up nourishment from him so that you go on growing in The Lord and because strong and vigorous in the truth you were taught. Let your lives overflow with joy and thanksgiving for all he has done". (Colossians 2: 2-7. The Living. Bible - Paraphrased).

These are the words of Paul in his letter to the Church at Colosse. Powerful words. Christ in our hearts is our ONLY hope of glory. So, whatever else we may spend our time doing, we must desperately seek to know Christ. We must let our roots down into him and absorb all the nourishment we need to be strong and vigorous. As we search, we begin to unearth 'mighty, untapped treasures of wisdom and knowledge.' Why leave the real thing and expend energy chasing shadows? Jesus is the word. We must search the word of God more dedicatedly than we seek the things of life. If you have Jesus in you, you have life anyway and remember, he is our only hope of glory.

You need to take that step today to know Christ with real certainty and clearer understanding. Clarity comes as you spend time with the word of God and in sincerity seek to know him deeper. The Holy Spirit is our  ever present Teacher and Helper.

If you can give your life to Christ, and trust him to save you, surely you can surrender to him each day's problem; starting with today's, no matter how gigantic it appears to be!

God Doesn't Come and Go

June 10, 2013 - "God Doesn't Come and Go. God Lasts ( keep this in mind in  the  midst of  life's battles)

Today was particularly hard. I could not focus. Too many scattered thoughts. Dreams that seem so far away and yet they tear at the fabric of my heart. I want to just stay someplace cool and quiet and just write. Sometimes, the desire is so overwhelming. I feel as though something is wrenching me apart. But there are bills to pay. I must travel to Calabar and Yenogoa. I have the children...my mother...my marriage and other things to think about.

I had a dream the early hours of this morning. There was this mysterious body of water just behind my yard or was it in the bath tub in my bathroom? Well, there was this huge Animal thrashing about violently. It looked like a Whale or Shark; so enormous and wild. It reminded me of  the film   - "Jaws".  I was terrified and horrified and I hurried to look for someone to slay it and in comes  a man. I run out immediately too scared to look upon the the battle I imagined will ensue.

Soon, the slayer emerges with what looked no bigger than a rat - lifeless, dead, inconsequential. I thought "what? Is that what has been causing this scare, this furore - is that what looked so mighty and foreboding?" I did not believe it. I went back to examine the water. It was all peace and calm; not even a stirring anywhere. I peered deeply into the pool which was clear and clean. I could see right to the bottom. Nothing.

I went back out to examine the rat again; unbelievable!

It dawned on me that a lot of  the challenges that we consider life- threatening or larger than life are no more menacing than that dead, lifeless rat; especially when we keep our gaze on the Almighty,  the creator of heaven and earth rather than on the challenge at hand.  ( It  is  He who sits above the circle of the earth, And its inhabitants  are  like grasshoppers... Isaiah 40:22 NKJV). Sometimes, this rat of a problem would keep one awake all night and cause some of us to be overtaken by compulsive eating!

Let your mind dwell  on Almighty God and not on the perceived size of the problem.  Remember that  "God doesn't come and go. God lasts". He is with you for the long haul - no breaks, no slumber, no pauses, no bad days, no holidays, no hormonally - induced  highs or lows. There is no variableness in Him; neither a shadow of turning. He is the  same yesterday, today,  forever. Remember that "He energizes those who get tired, gives fresh strength to dropouts".

Read and meditate on the following :

"So—who is like me? Who holds a candle to me?" says The Holy. Look at the night skies: Who do you think made all this? Who marches this army of stars out each night, counts them off, calls each by name —so magnificent! so powerful!— and never overlooks a single one? Why would you ever complain, O Jacob, or, whine, Israel, saying, "God has lost track of me. He doesn't care what happens to me"? Don't you know anything? Haven't you been listening? God doesn't come and go. God lasts. He's Creator of all you can see or imagine. He doesn't get tired out, doesn't pause to catch his breath. And he knows everything, inside and out. He energizes those who get tired, gives fresh strength to dropouts. For even young people tire and drop out, young folk in their prime stumble and fall. But those who wait upon God get fresh strength. They spread their wings and soar like eagles, They run and don't get tired, they walk and don't lag behind. (Isaiah 40:25-31 MSG)
